Emergency repairs to the seawall at Moledo Beach in Caminha, where the sea caused damage last winter, are now almost complete.
Moledo Beach seawall repairs near completion
Work to strengthen the structure began on 1 April. For the time being, the project covers only the stabilisation of the foundations and promenade, rather than rebuilding the wall, in order to ensure safe conditions for the bathing season, which is expected to start on 16 June.
According to the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), surveys are also being carried out along the entire seawall to assess its condition and prepare a permanent solution.
"We are pleased to see that the contract work is progressing at a good pace. This initial intervention is crucial to ensuring a calm and safe bathing season, which should begin in June," Caminha Council wrote on its social media channels. It added that the project "is a key scheme for boosting tourism and the municipality's appeal, as Moledo is one of the most sought-after and busiest bathing areas in the north".
Damage caused by recent storms
The seawall collapsed over a 50-metre stretch during storms in recent months, also affecting the terrace of a nearby beach bar. The work will cost around €150,000 and is scheduled to take one month to complete.
